Chapter Seventeen

“CAN you shapeshift into other people?” Nalani asked Akaran. If the answer was yes, it could form the basis of a plan. If not…

“As long as I know them well by sight, and have heard their voice, then yes.” Akaran replied, her eyes narrowing.

“I don’t suppose you know any Assembly Members well by sight and voice?” Nalani wasn’t hopeful. Akaran seemed a recluse, someone who would stay huddled down at her lake. Although she was here in the city now. It would make the planning longer and more complicated if they had to seek out an Assembly Member. Nalani had visions of finding Galena and having Akaran impersonate her.

“Actually, I do,” Akaran replied with a faint quirk to her lips. “I keep an eye on who comes and goes to the old HQ.” She turned away and hunched her shoulders.

Did she believe that was wrong in some way?

“It pays to know a little of the enemy. Besides, I always hoped it might give me notice if they ever decided to mess with my lake again.” Her brows drew down, forming a formidable expression. Nalani wondered how anyone had survived ‘messing’ with her lake last time. Though if Akaran had changed or attacked them, Karas would have sent an army to deal with her.

“That is welcome news.” Nalani’s shoulders relaxed. This made life easier, probably. “Do you know who he or she is?”

“Of course.” The sneer was back in Akaran’s voice, but she visibly controlled her expression. “Yes. I have heard people refer to him by name. He is Salvatore. He is a scientist at the HQ. He, along with many others, works up there for six days, then comes back into the city for rest day. However,” she paused dramatically, “occasionally he has been known to return on rest day. There are far less staff and presumably guards also, on rest day.” Her smile this time was smug.

Nalani grinned. “We have the beginnings of a plan. This is why I was led to you.” Flutters began inside her stomach. Was it all finally going to start coming together? She turned to Felipe. “Perhaps we need to check that you can take me through a wall. If you can, then you, me and Akaran can attempt to infiltrate the HQ next rest day. Our Salvatore can pretend he needs to work if anyone sees him. Hopefully, we can avoid detection. If Akaran distracts the front door guard, Felipe and I can go through the wall beyond the security.”

“Why don’t you all enter secretly?” Luca asked.

“We need Akaran, as Salvatore, to keep the guard’s attention away from us. Felipe won’t be able to tell if any guards are watching unless Akaran tells us. Akaran can go before us and clear the way. We don’t want anyone to see us if possible.” She paused. They needed a map. How could they know what was on the other side of a wall otherwise? They needed a suitable place to enter, safe yet not too far from the main entrance.
